Training Your Dog

Do you train your dog? The Kennel Club offer a training scheme aimed at getting the best out of your dog, not just teaching them obedience but also teaching you how to handle a dog as well as your legal obligations. For example, do you know that when you are on a public highway your dog MUST be on a lead?

Dogs need to be stimulated and training gives them that as well as helping them to socialise with other dogs. This is called the Good Citizen Dogs Scheme (GCDS).

There are many ways you can keep your dog happy and healthy however this is a brilliant start and many different clubs recommend you do this scheme as it lays down the foundations for so many other things.

Ziggy, the mascot of Dogs Allowed, went all the way through the levels and reached her gold award by the age of 18 months! The scheme helped massively when training in agility. She is now a grade 6 agility dog who has competed at Crufts, and has also dipped her paw into a bit of flyball and heel work to music as well.

The scheme is for dogs all shapes and sizes, ages and abilities. It promotes family participation and on top of all of that, it is fun! For dogs aged under 12 months, they can start on the puppy foundation course which is usually competed in 8 weeks. After the puppy foundation is passed, there are bronze, silver and gold levels. Each level ends in an assessment where you receive a rosette and certificate at the end of it if you pass.

All of us at Dogs Allowed recommend giving it a go, you may be surprised with how much you can achieve!
